Burning the PlexDisc DVD+R Disc in the LG GP96YB70 optical drive
Hi everyone,
Today, we will be burning a PlexDisc DVD+R disc in the LG GP96YB70 external slim drive:

This drive supports burning these discs at 4x and 8x. We will be burning it at 8x:

This unit supports setting the DVD+R Book Type to DVD-ROM. This is useful as this can improve the disc compatibility with older drives:

The drive was able to burn the disc successfully:

And verified it correctly:

The drive burns the disc in Constant Angular Velocity (CAV) starting at 3.3x and going all the way to 8x.
We can confirm the DVD+R Book Type was changed to DVD-ROM:

This is how the burned disc looks:

Quality Scans
We’ll now see how well the disc burned in this drive by doing a surface quality scan on the following drives:
- LiteOn DS-8A5S
- LiteOn DU-8A5LH
- LG GP96YB70
- Pioneer DVR-XD09
- Samsung SE-506AB
- Samsung SN-208AB
All scans were done with a reading speed of 4x except on the Pioneer DVR-XD09:

From all of the tests above, the only drive that reported higher numbers was the LiteOn DS-8A5S. The rest of them shows good scans.
Conclusion
The LG GP96YB70 is able to successfully burn and verify these discs when burned at 8x. This is in contrast of the LG BP60NB10 where it failed to burn it correctly at this same speed. This drive is already good enough to play back DVD movies and it seems to be a decent DVD burner too.
